Shrinking Cities

About us

A sad farewell to one of our own, Josh Bennett.  On 20 Feb. 2010, Josh lost a 3-year battle with colon cancer.

Josh was part of the early MURP program in Alexandria, VA.  He contributed to the MURP program in many ways.  One of his recent contributions was helping with the Brookings Institute Shrinking Cities workshop in Fall 2009 by compiling notes for the event.  Josh also traveled with us to Cleveland and helped with the Re-Imagining Cleveland charrette.  Many of the photos you see on this website and some of the raw video footage were taken by him.

Josh was a quiet, amiable guy who was also a passionate and avid bicyclist.

We will definitely miss you. Farewell, friend.

Graduate students from the Fall 2009 Shrinking Cities Planning Studio and research assistants created this web site. Over the course of the semester, they explored the planning, policy, and design dimensions of how to reconfigure the built environment of shrinking cities, with a focus on strategies that promote urban greening and sustainability. In October 2009, the class traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, to learn about efforts to reclaim vacant properties, revitalize neighborhoods and make this ‘shrinking city’ more sustainable and viable.
